Video surveillance captured 17-year-old Kara Kopetsky leaving her Belton, Missouri high school on May 4, 2007. Those images are the last known credible trace of the teen and she has not been seen since.

For nine-plus years, Kara’s vanishing has received a substantial amount of state and national coverage – including episodes of Crime Watch Daily and Investigation Discovery’s Disappeared devoted to the case. However, despite the exposure, Kara’s disappearance remains unsolved.

Kara’s mother, Rhonda Beckford, kindly spoke with me on the afternoon of September 15, shortly after attending a hearing where her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old Kylr Yust, was formally charged with setting fire to the vehicle of another missing Missouri woman, Jessica Runions, who disappeared on September 8. We discussed the details surrounding Kara’s vanishing, her feelings on the police investigation and other topics pertaining to Kara’s case.
