The brutal murder of a 10-year-old girl in Albuquerque, New Mexico has devastated the community and troubled even the most seasoned law enforcement officials.
The remains of the victim, Victoria Martens, were discovered Wednesday morning under a burning blanket by officers responding to a reported disturbance at the apartment of the girl’s mother. Police soon learned that Martens had been dismembered and say the child was injected with methamphetamines to calm her down so two of the suspects charged in the crime could sexually assault her. Authorities believe the girl was stabbed and strangled.
Charged in Martens’ murder is her mother, Michelle Martens, the mother’s boyfriend, Fabian Gonzales and Gonzales’ cousin, Jessica Kelley. All three face charges of murder, child abuse, kidnapping and other charges. Kelley and Gonzales are both also charged with rape.
Kelley and Gonzales both have lengthy criminal records, including a sex crime on Kelley’s rap sheet.
Martens was scheduled to celebrate her tenth birthday on the day she was murdered.
A judge has set a bond of $1 million cash-only for each suspect.
