The New York Times reports that a federal judge today overturned the murder and sexual assault convictions of Brendan Dassey, a subject of the popular Netflix docuseries Making a Murderer.
Dassey was convicted in 2007 of participating in the fall 2005 murder and sexual assault of Teresa Halbach and sentenced to life in prison.
In a court order, Judge William E. Duffin cited false promises made to Dassey by investigators during his March 2006 interrogation as a major factor in his decision.
Dassey must now be released from prison within 90 days unless authorities schedule a new trial.
