CBSNews.com reports that a Memphis mother has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder while committing aggravated child neglect in the deaths of four of her five children – three daughters and one son – all under the age of five.
Authorities say 29-year-old Shanynthia Gardner murdered the children by cutting their throats. Their bodies were discovered after responding deputies entered her apartment and found the mother of five with superficial cuts to her neck and wrists, along with a butcher knife believed to be the murder weapon.
A fifth child, Gardner’s 7-year-old son, was able to flee the residence.
Gardner reportedly confessed to the slayings while speaking to her husband via telephone. She is currently being held without bond, with an arraignment scheduled for tomorrow.
