A Baltimore City Circuit Court judge yesterday vacated the conviction of a Maryland man accused of strangling his ex-girlfriend to death in 1999, reports CBSNews.com.
Adnan Syed, the subject of the immensely popular “Serial” true crime podcast, has been granted a new trial after being convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and robbery in February 2000. He is currently serving a life sentence.
Syed’s case garnered national fame when it became the focus of the “Serial” podcast, a show which examines the story and calls Syed’s guilt into question.
Baltimore Circuit Judge Martin Welch said he granted Syed a new trial due to his attorney failing to cross-examine a cell tower expert regarding the reliability of data which placed Syed’s phone near the site where he is accused of burying his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee.
