Investigators on Tuesday announced that a headless, limbless torso found at a rest stop along Interstate 70 in Ohio in June 2004 has been identified as 35-year-old Deanna Howland, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
DNA tests confirmed the identity of the remains after comparing samples from some of Howland’s relatives.
Howland, who was estranged from her family, was not reported missing until last year. The case was reopened in 2014.
Authorities declined to discuss specifics in regard to the information they received which prompted them to investigate a possible link between the torso and Howland’s missing persons case.
