46 Georgia Correctional Officers Charged in Drug Trafficking Sting

georgia_correctionsCNN reports that the FBI arrested 46 current and former correction officers Thursday morning in a sting at nine facilities around Georgia, the result of a two-year undercover operation.

Among those arrested were five members of the COBRA unit, a squad aimed at busting up drug dealing in prisons.

Investigators also discovered that prison guards and staff were smuggling contraband such as liquor, tobacco and cell phones in exchange for money. Inmates used the phones to commit wire fraud, identity theft and money laundering.

Officers are also charged with using their badges to facilitate drug deals involving cocaine and meth on either side of the prison wall.
