WBNS-TV reports that 34-year-old Hershel Ray Jones III has been arrested in suspicion of murder in the shooting death of Danville, Ohio police officer Thomas Cottrell. Cottrell’s body was discovered behind the Danville Municipal Building on Sunday night, deceased as a result of gunshot wounds. His gun and patrol car had both been stolen.
A woman claiming to be Jones’ ex-girlfriend reportedly telephoned police dispatch on Sunday evening to warn the department that he was armed and “looking to kill an officer.” Dispatchers put out a call, but failed to make contact with Cottrell.
Jones was apprehended after police spotted him running out of a house at 1:30 a.m. No charges have been announced as of this writing.
Cottrell was the first police officer to be killed in the state of Ohio in 2016.
